Moral Decline

Do any of us have any doubt that America is the most wasteful society in the history of the world?

The cold, hard truth is that Americans are gluttons and pigs and horrible caretakers of this planet. The environmental destruction that America is causing is absolutely inexcusable.

And yet the God of the Bible is the ultimate environmentalist.

You don't believe us? Just check this out:

Exodus 23:10-11

"For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove."

Not even the most wacked out liberal environmentalist would suggest making farmers in America rest their land once every seven years.

But can you say "overfarming"?

Can you say "depletion of the topsoil"?

We have ruined our farmland in America and it is becoming a huge crisis.

Perhaps the God of the Bible knew better than us after all.

Leviticus 19:19

"Keep my decrees. Do not mate different kinds of animals. Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed. Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material."

Surely this command must be completely unreasonable!

So no polyester clothing in American stores?

No nylon?

No genetic engineering?

No genetically modified food?

What would Americans eat?

Only 100 percent biodegradable clothing for everyone in America?

No clothing and plastic and other junk filling up America's landfills forever and ever?

Perhaps God knew EXACTLY what He was doing after all.

Today one of the great dangers to the environment is the indiscriminate cutting down of trees that results in the depletion of forests, increased erosion and the destruction of many animal habitats. The Scriptures talk about tree conservation when they say, "When you besiege a city for a long time, while making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an axe against them . . ." (Deuteronomy 20:19-20).

The truth is that God has known exactly what is best for America all along, and when Americans do their own thing they really, really mess things up.

And the reality is that the God of the Bible is going to judge those who destroy the earth:

Revelation 11:18

"The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great— and for destroying those who destroy the earth."

So we see that if Americans really believed in the Bible that they would be the most radical environmentalists of all.

But the truth is that all of us need to repent.

All of us have all sinned over and over and over, and we all stand guilty before the God of the universe.

But the good news is that there is forgiveness, and that forgiveness comes through Jesus Christ:
